I have recently learned of the arrest of Palestinian human rights defender, Wa'el Al-Faqeeh on 9 December 2009. Al-Faqeeh was arrested for his co-ordination of several non-violent grassroots community projects in the Nablus region of the occupied West Bank, such as peaceful demonstrations, the annual olive harvest campaign and many educational and cultural initiatives for Palestinian youth.

Al-Faqeeh's trial is expected to begin on 19 January. He will be charged with "providing a service to an unpermitted association", an accusation frequently brought against detainees for whom Israel has no substantial or legitimate evidence to warrant their case. As my representative to Israel, I implore you to address this severe violation of Al-Faqeeh's human rights. Al-Faqeeh must be granted his right to freedom of speech and assembly.
